Pastelli (brittle) is a favourite Cypriot sweet snack made traditionally with carob syrup (or honey) and sesame seeds. In older times, village children were eager to a get a block of pastelli from their parents who occasionally travelled to the well known festivals (paneyiria) in order to buy their basic household needs. Today’s pastelli comes in a variety of shapes and flavours but the production method and the basic ingredients have remained almost unchanged over time.
In addition to being delicious and crispy, pastelli is a healthy snack since sesame seeds are a source of copper, manganese, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, vitamin B1 and many more. Both carob and honey are antioxidants and a healthy way to begin your day with a sweet taste. Due to the coexistence of sesame and honey (or carob), pastelli is considered an energy booster and one of the most nutritive delicacies, full of useful vitamins for the human organism.
